-Wastani Cattle are a composite breed comprised of five Bos Indicus “Zebu” donor breeds. Wastani cattle were selected for phenotype and production traits from these compositions.
Why was the Wastani breed developed?
-The intent of the Wastani development was to create a breed that could produce economically in a minimal environment. The cattle needed to be moderate, productive, hardy, and exotic. Cattle were selected by using several production traits: frame size, conformation, milk production, fertility, hardiness, disposition, and growth rate. All Bos Indicus donors were selected to maintain the core traits that allow Bos Indicus to thrive, calf easily, and be low maintenance. Bos Indicus selection was also strategic in the breed to lend the opportunity for heterosis or hybrid vigor when crossing with Bos Taurus cattle such as Angus and Hereford.
